The long and winding road is coming to a head now that the courts are hearing from both sides concerning the wrongful conviction of Marni Yang in 2009. With a weak defense and so many pieces of flawed evidence allowed into the trial, Marni Yang sits in prison awaiting her exoneration.
On October 4, 2007, Rhoni Reuter, the pregnant girlfriend of Chicago Bears 1995 Super Bowl Champions Safety Shawn Gayle was murdered in her Deerfield townhome with a 9mm gun. It was a sad day for everyone including the Reuter and the Yang families. Rhoni and her unborn baby Skyler did not deserve to be murdered and Marni did not deserve to be convicted of a crime.
Questions linger about the crime and how it led to the conviction of Marni Yang. During the investigation, MSI Detective Services has examined every piece of evidence and found experts to refute the 2009 decision to convict her.
Looking a the evidence, it is hard to understand how the neighbor driving through the lot, may have witnessed the killer running up the stairs, 2 steps at a time on the sunny and clear October morning at about 7:55am. This witness, who worked for a plastic surgeon, said she clearly saw the African American young male, 5′ 8″ tall with a muscular build, running into the townhome entrance just before the shooting. She was sure this was an African American male as she worked for a plastic surgeon and said she knows skin tone and bone structure. No way was this a Caucasian! How 3 months after her initial statement did she change it. “Yes, perhaps this was a 5′ 00″, 100 pound, Caucasian female dressed as an African American man.”
How was it that the police insisted that a silencer (suppressor) was used on the murder weapon despite the fact that an expert looking at the burn marks on the clothing of Ms. Reuter could plainly see that no suppressor was used. There was no telltale debris and no other signs of such a suppressor being used.
These and other questionable evidence will be highlighted on an upcoming 20/20 episode.
